The book of 2 Samuel records King David’s worship after retrieving the ark of the covenant.
King David and his men reclaimed the ark from Kiriath Jearim, a city located about nine miles from Jerusalem.
Before this, the ark was in Beth Shemesh, where the Philistines left it seven months after capturing it in battle.
While they held the ark, the Philistines experienced many terrible things, including tumors, boils, and an infestation of rats. The Philistines didn’t understand God’s power, so they gladly returned the ark to the Israelites.
Connect as a family
Gather your family and play your favorite worship music. Explain that we often think of worship as just singing, but we can worship God in many different ways: prayer, silence, art, dance, giving, and thanksgiving, just to name a few. Discuss some of these ways to worship God. Read 2 Samuel 6. Ask your children why David was leaping and dancing. Ask them why David offered sacrifices to the Lord, and discuss ways your family might sacrifice something (TV time, Internet time, etc.) as an act of worship to God.
After reading the Scripture passage, discuss these questions together:
What did David and his men bring to Jerusalem?
How did David worship God?
What are some ways we can worship God?
