Feast of Unleavened Bread: Remembering and Celebrating God as Redeemer

Did you know?

Share these facts to get the conversation started:

  • The Israelites celebrated seven annual festivals: Passover, Feast of Unleavened Bread, Festival of First Fruits, Feast of Harvest, Feast of Trumpets, Day of Atonement, and the Feast of Tabernacles (or Booths).

  • During the festivals, the Israelites ate, danced, sang, played instruments, prayed, and offered sacrifices to God.

  • The Feast of Unleavened Bread began the day after Passover. God commanded the people to eat unleavened bread (bread without yeast) for seven days. He also told them not to work on the first and seventh days. The unleavened bread represented their quick departure from Egypt; they didn’t have time for the yeast to make their bread rise.

  • In the New Testament, Jesus spoke of yeast (or leaven) symbolically, as sin. Jesus broke unleavened bread with His disciples and said, “This is My body.” Jesus was without sin as His body was “broken” during His crucifixion.

Connect as a family

Gather your family with a loaf of bread and some flat crackers or matzah bread. Explain what yeast is and how it works. Talk about the difference between the loaf of bread and the crackers. Share that when God’s people fled Egypt, they left so quickly that they didn’t have time to wait for their bread dough to rise. The Israelites celebrated the Feast of Unleavened Bread as a way of remembering and celebrating God as their Redeemer—the One who bought them back and saved them. Read Luke 1v68. Talk about how Jesus came to redeem us from sin and death. Praise God for making the way for us to be with Him forever.

After reading the Scripture passage, discuss these questions together:

  • What do these verses tell us about God?

  • How did God redeem the Israelites?

  • How has God redeemed you?

These questions can easily extend into the rest of the week. Look for opportunities to bring conversations about God as Redeemer into your everyday life as a family.

Blessing

Blessings are often used in the Bible. Look for opportunities to bring conversations about how God gives new life into your everyday life as a family.

A blessing to pray over your child: (Child’s name), may you trust and know the Lord as your Savior and Redeemer.
