The Israelites celebrated seven annual feasts and festivals: Passover, Feast of Unleavened Bread, Festival of First Fruits, Feast of Harvest, Feast of Trumpets, Day of Atonement, and Feast of Tabernacles (or Booths).
During the feasts, the Israelites ate, danced, sang, played instruments, prayed, and offered sacrifices to God.
The Day of Atonement celebrated God’s righteousness. It was a reflective and often solemn festival that consisted of fasting, prayer, and repentance.
The New Testament significance of the Day of Atonement lies in Christ, our High Priest, who shed His blood once and for all to make atonement for our sins before God.
Connect as a family
Set aside an evening to remember and celebrate with a fun family dinner. Choose a favorite meal (pizza, tacos, or another family favorite) and enlist everyone to help prepare it. When you sit down to eat, spend time remembering what God has done in your lives and how you have seen God work in the lives of your friends and family members. Read Psalm 16 together.
After reading the Scripture passage, discuss these questions together:
Are there areas of your life where you need to ask for God’s forgiveness?
How can we show our thankfulness to God for sending Jesus?
What are some things we can remember and celebrate this week?
These questions can easily extend into the rest of the week. Look for opportunities to bring conversations about God's righteousness into your everyday life as a family.

Blessings are often used in the Bible. A blessing can be a prayer of commission, a portion of Scripture, or words to encourage and guide.
A blessing to pray over your child: (Child’s name), may He fill you with His praise and remind you of His righteousness this week.
