Did you know?

Share these facts to get the conversation started:

  • The Israelites celebrated seven festivals: Passover, Feast of Unleavened Bread, Festival of First Fruits, Feast of Harvest, Feast of Trumpets, Day of Atonement, and the Feast of Tabernacles (or Booths).

  • During the festivals, the Israelites ate, danced, sang, played instruments, prayed, and offered sacrifices to God.

  • The Feast of Tabernacles was a time of thanksgiving to remember God’s blessings in the wilderness as well as His continued blessings.

  • The New Testament significance of this feast reminds us that this life is temporary and that all of our lifelong dreams, hopes, and aspirations will one day be fulfilled in our future home and inheritance with Jesus.

Connect as a family

During a meal, ask your children to think about some things they know to be true about God (e.g., He is love, He shows mercy, He is righteous). Go around the table and have each person share. Talk with your children about the festivals God’s people celebrated in the Bible and how the people spent time remembering and celebrating God’s goodness. Share that one way the Israelites remembered was by thanking God for His many blessings. Read Psalm 95v1–6. After reading, spend some time as a family praying and thanking God for His goodness and everlasting grace and for bringing us into the kingdom of Jesus Christ.

After reading the Scripture passage, discuss these questions together:

  • How have you seen God’s blessings in your life?

  • How has God blessed our family?

  • How can we thank God for His many blessings?

These questions can easily extend into the rest of the week. Look for opportunities to bring conversations about God's abundant blessings into your everyday life as a family.

Blessing

Blessings are often used in the Bible. A blessing can be a prayer of commission, a portion of Scripture, or words to encourage and guide.

A blessing to pray over your child: (Child’s name), may you always praise God for His blessings and goodness.
