The Parent Weekly for July 16th, God Delivers

What we learned today

Big Idea: God Delivers.

Paul and Silas in Prison. Acts 16v16–35. God delivered Paul and Silas from prison by sending an earthquake

Where we're headed next time

Big Idea: God is the living God

Paul in Athens. Acts 17. Paul preached to a crowd about the living God.

Did you know?

Share these facts to get the conversation started:

  • Paul was from the cosmopolitan city of Tarsus. Tarsus, Athens, and Ephesus were considered the foremost intellectual cities in the ancient world.

  • Paul was able to teach to the members of the Areopagus from a position that would fit their intellectual framework.

  • Paul appealed to the common ground between them. He also systematically undermined the assumptions of his Epicurean and Stoic listeners.

  • Paul’s listeners became hostile when he spoke of the resurrection.

Connect as a family

Invite your children to take turns pretending they’re Paul as they read Acts 17v22–31 to you while standing on a small stool. Explain that Paul took a bold stand for God and preached to many people. Talk about some situations in our lives where God wants us to be bold with His truth. Pray and ask God to give all of you boldness as you share the good news of Jesus with others.

After reading the Scripture passage, discuss these questions together:

  • To whom did the people of Athens build an idol?

  • What kinds of things did Paul tell the people about God?

  • How can we play a part in helping others know the one true God?

These questions can easily extend into the rest of the week. Look for opportunities to bring conversations about how God is the living God into your everyday life as a family.

Blessing

Blessings are often used in the Bible. A blessing can be a prayer of commission, a portion of Scripture, or words to encourage and guide.

A blessing to pray over your child: (Child’s name), may God reveal Himself to you this week. May God inspire you to share the truth with others.
