King Ahab and Elijah. 1 Kings 16—18. God proved He is the one true God in a showdown on Mount Carmel.

Share these facts to get the conversation started:
Hundreds of years after King David, King Ahab ruled over Israel. The Bible says that King Ahab “did more evil in the eyes of the Lord than any of those before him” (1 Kings 16v30).
Because of King Ahab’s choices, God sent a drought over all of Israel that would prepare His people’s hearts for the contest on Mount Carmel—a competition to prove, once again, that God is the one and only.
God answered Elijah in the contest by sending fire from heaven and burning up the sacrifice that Baal could not consume.
After this contest, God sent rain at Elijah’s request, showing that He—not Baal—controls the weather.
Connect as a family
Create a “Masterpiece Theatre” setting in your home. Find a large, comfy chair and set a lamp next to it. Gather your family and tell them that this part of The Big God Story is filled with excitement. Share with them that it ends with God being the Hero as He shows His power and proves that He is the one and only God. Read 1 Kings 18v16–39 aloud—dramatically! Once you’ve gone through the passage, ask your children to tell you why God was the Hero in this part of The Big God Story.
After reading the Scripture passage, discuss these questions together:
What did Elijah pray before he made a sacrifice to God?
Why did Elijah cover the altar with water?
How did the people respond to God’s display of power?
These questions can easily extend into the rest of the week. Look for opportunities to bring conversations about God is the One and Only into your everyday life as a family.
Blessing
Blessings are often used in the Bible. A blessing can be a prayer of commission, a portion of Scripture, or words to encourage and guide.
A blessing to pray over your child: (Child’s name), may you know that our God is the one and only God. May you always turn to Him for everything you need.
