In the Jewish educational system of the day, boys and girls (ages six to 12) participated in Bet Sefer, where they learned to read, write, and memorize the Torah.
Only the top (male) students, ages 13 to 16, continued on to Bet Midrash. Here they memorized the entire Old Testament. They would continue to be taught by the local rabbi (while learning the family trade).
The best of the best would be specially selected by well-known traveling rabbis to enter Bet Talmud (ages 15 to 30). They would often leave home to travel with and emulate the rabbi. It was the highest of honors.
When the Rabbi Jesus asked the fishermen to follow Him, the men considered it a dream come true.
Connect as a family
If you have access to water (a lake, an ocean, a stream, etc.), find a quiet spot next to it and read Luke 5v1–11. Ask your children what surprised them the most about this part of The Big God Story. Explain that Jesus invited the fishermen to be part of His plans. Jesus said He would make them fishers of people. Talk with your children about what Jesus meant by that statement and with whom He might want them to share their faith.
After reading the Scripture passage, discuss these questions together:
What do you think Jesus meant when he said that Simon Peter would catch people?
Do you think it’s hard to follow Jesus? Why or why not?
What do you think it means to be part of God’s big plan?
These questions can easily extend into the rest of the week. Look for opportunities to bring conversations about how God's plans are best into your everyday life as a family.
Blessing
Blessings are often used in the Bible. A blessing can be a prayer of commission, a portion of Scripture, or words to encourage and guide.
A blessing to pray over your child: (Child’s name), may you know that God invites you into His story, and may He show you what part you will play in His plans.
