Where we're headed next time

Big Idea: God is Wisdom

Letter from James. James 3

Did you know?

Share these facts to get the conversation started:

  • The book of James has sometimes been called “the Proverbs of the New Testament.”

  • Because God is wisdom, James uses (and points us to) Old Testament wisdom literature to lead us toward a life of faith- lled wisdom.

  • James 1v5 says, “If any of you lacks wisdom, you should ask God ... and it will be given to you.” This is reminiscent of Proverbs 2v3–6, which says, “If you call out for insight and cry aloud for understanding ... then you will understand the fear of the Lord ... For the Lord gives wisdom; from his mouth come knowledge and understanding.”

Connect as a family

This week, ask each family member to write down words that come to mind when they think about wisdom.
Invite them to share their thoughts. Then ask, “What kinds of people do you think are wise?” After your family members respond, let them know you’ll be reading a part of The Big God Story that reveals the source of true wisdom. Read James 3v13–18 together. God is wisdom, and if we ask Him for wisdom, He promises to give it to us.

After reading the Scripture passage, discuss these questions together:

  • What is wisdom?

  • What’s the difference between the “wisdom” of the world and God’s wisdom?

  • How does this passage describe God’s wisdom?

These questions can easily extend into the rest of the week. pe into your everyday life as a family. Look for opportunities to bring conversations about how God gives wisdom into your everyday life as a family.

Blessing

Blessings are often used in the Bible. A blessing can be a prayer of commission, a portion of Scripture, or words to encourage and guide.

A blessing to pray over your child:(Child’s name), may you have the courage to ask for wisdom. May you know that God is wisdom, and may you trust Him to guide you in all that you do.
