Where we're headed next time

Big Idea: God is Love

Nicodemus's Question. John 2v23–25; 3v1–21

A Pharisee named Nicodemus came to speak to Jesus at night.

Did you know?

Share these facts to get the conversation started:

  • Jesus asserts in John 3v16 that “God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life.” In John 3v18, Jesus goes on to say, “Whoever does not believe stands condemned already.”

  • Jesus knew the people at the Passover feast only believed because they saw Him perform miracles; their faith wasn’t true saving faith. Nicodemus probably fell into this category of believers.

  • Through Jesus’ death and resurrection, people can have new life; and only through God’s Spirit can people become born-again children of God.

Connect as a family

Read John 3v1–9. Talk about the questions Nicodemus had for Jesus. Explain that God welcomes our questions, and consider starting a list of questions your children have about God. Don’t worry if you can’t answer them on the spot. Work together to find the answers. Read John 3v16. Tell your children that God loves us so much that He sent Jesus to bring us into relationship with Him and give us life with Him forever! Discuss with your children whether or not they have made the choice to follow Jesus. If they haven’t, give them an opportunity to do so. If any of your children make this decision, celebrate!

After reading the Scripture passage, discuss these questions together:

  • What questions did Nicodemus have for God?

  • What questions do you have for God?

  • How can you be “born again”?

These questions can easily extend into the rest of the week. Look for opportunities to bring conversations about how God Is Love into your everyday life as a family.

Blessing

Blessings are often used in the Bible. A blessing can be a prayer of commission, a portion of Scripture, or words to encourage and guide.

A blessing to pray over your child: (Child’s name), may you know that God is love. And may you show love to others as God has loved you.
