Year 1, Winter: Lesson 5
Hello parents! We now have free coloring books available for children who remain in the gathering with their family. Available at the Kids check-in desk.
What we learned today
Big Idea: Jesus chooses us to follow Him (part 1)
Luke 5v1–11 Jesus chose 12 apostles and prepared them to go and tell others about Him. Today He calls each of us to follow Him as well.
Where we're headed next time
*We’re switching the order for these two lessons due to the missed New Year weekend. Back on track after next week.
Big Idea: Jesus is born (part 2)
Luke 2v8–20. While the shepherds were watching their sheep at night, the sky lit up and an angel of the Lord appeared to them. The shepherds were terrified. The angel told them not to be afraid for he had come with good news. The Savior had been born. The Promise they had been waiting for had finally come!
Did you know?
Share these facts to get the conversation started:
The shepherds were the first to hear that
Jesus had been born. God sent angels to tell
them that the Savior had come.
After seeing Jesus, the shepherds praised
God because they knew He had kept His
promise to send a Savior.
Connect as a family
Read Luke 2v8–12. Ask your child whom the shepherds found in the manger. It was Jesus! Remind your child that we celebrate Christmas because Jesus, the promised Savior, was born!
After reading the Scripture passage, discuss these thoughts together:
Who told the shepherds that Jesus had come? An angel shared the good news with them!
Were the shepherds happy or sad when they saw Jesus?
How did they show how happy they were? They praised God!
Blessings are often used in the Bible. A blessing can be a prayer of commission, a portion of Scripture, or words to encourage and guide.
Open a Bible and read Luke 2v14: Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace to men on whom his favor rests.
A blessing to pray over your child: (Child’s name), may you give glory to God for the gift of His Son, Jesus.
