The Parent Weekly

We believe parents are the primary teachers in a child's life. Because of this, we post a Parent Weekly each Sunday which includes big ideas from that week’s teaching, the memory verse, questions for family discussion, and a look at where we’re headed the following week. Our hope is for this to be a helpful tool as you continue raising your kids to love God and love people.

Year 1, Summer: Lesson 1

What we learned today

Big Idea: God is powerful (part 1)

1 Samuel 16—17. God had rejected Saul as king and sent Samuel to the house of Jesse where he would choose Israel’s new king. Samuel anointed David. God’s Spirit was on David and when he fought Goliath, David was victorious.

Where we're headed next time

Big Idea: God is powerful (part 2)

1 Samuel 16—17. God had rejected Saul as king and sent Samuel to the house of Jesse where he would choose Israel’s new king. Samuel anointed David. God’s Spirit was on David and when he fought Goliath, David was victorious.

Did you know?

  • David was the smallest and youngest of his eight brothers. It surprised everyone when Samuel anointed him as the future king.

  • It’s possible that Goliath could have been as much as nine and a half feet tall!

Connect as a family

Your child may enjoy looking at his reflection. Allow him to see his own power by flexing his muscles in a mirror.

  • What does this part of The Big God Story tell  you about God?

  • He is more powerful than anything or anyone!

Blessing

Blessings are often used in the Bible. A blessing can be a prayer of commission, a portion of Scripture, or words to encourage and guide.

A blessing to pray over your child: (Insert your child’s name), may you learn to see God’s amazing power in your life.
